What are tooth gems?
Tooth gems are Swarovski crystals, diamonds, opals, or 18 to 22 karat gold charms that are temporarily applied to the surface of your tooth using dental composite (the same material dentists use for fillings and attaching braces or Invisalign attachments, so it’s safe, non-invasive, and non-permanent - no drilling involved)
How do tooth gems work?
At BW Beauty, I use the same products and methods to apply tooth gems that you’d find in a dental clinic so they’re safe for your enamel and easily removable (at the dentist) when it's time to take them off. Keep up with regular brushing, flossing, and dental visits to ensure everything stays safe and healthy.
How long do they last?
Tooth gems can last anywhere from 3 months to several years depending on the design, placement, and how well you care for them! Smaller gems might last longer, while larger gems may have a shorter lifespan as they're more easily knocked off while eating etc.
Will it hurt or cause sensitivity?
You shouldn't feel anything at all! Sometimes there's a short adjustment period where you may notice the gem against your lip, but it goes away quickly as you get used to it being there. If anything ever feels bothersome, your dentist can help.
Can tooth gems be applied to any tooth?
Tooth gems can be placed on natural, healthy teeth.
Can I eat and drink normally with a tooth gem?
Yes, just avoid biting directly into anything hard, crunchy or sticky (like hard candies or apples) on you gem. Tooth gems are durable, but are meant to come off with enough pressure to keep your enamel safe, so just be aware of them while eating. And as always, good, regular brushing and flossing and dentist checkups help keep everything clean and secure.
How do I remove a tooth gem?
If your gem doesn’t fall off on its own over time and you're ready to take it off, it's best to have it removed by a dental professional. It's a super quick and simple process that won’t damage your tooth when done properly. Keep in mind some dental offices may charge a small fee for removal, but can be easily done at your regular visits. Most dental offices know how to do the removals as it's identical to removing orthodontic braces, but I have recommendations if needed.
Can they be applied to dental work?
Tooth gems can only be applied to natural teeth, not crowns, veneers, or dental work.
Do my teeth need to be perfect to get one?
Not at all, tooth gems are for all smiles. I offer gem options for all preferences and teeth! The sky is truly the limit with tooth gems and the options you have to find the perfect fit for you.
What happens if it falls off and I swallow it?
You won't even notice, other than that the sparkle is gone! The gems are tiny, smooth, and body-safe, so will just pass through your system if swallowed.
Can I get a tooth gem if I wear a retainer, nightguard, or Invisalign?
Yes, retainers can usually be worn with tooth gems. The pressure from a retainer may affect longevity of the gems slightly, but many past clients have worn both without issue.
That said, Invisalign and similar clear aligners are still not recommended over tooth gems, as the tight fit can interfere with the orthodontic treatment itself.
If you're wearing retainers or planning orthodontic treatment, you can also ask your dentist or orthodontist if they're able to mould your appliance around existing tooth gems! When in doubt, always best to check with your dental professional so you can make the choice that works best for your smile.
Right after your appointment:
Your gems are fully set by the time you leave the appointment! You can eat, drink, brush, and floss like normal, there's no special rules or restrictions.
Daily care:
Stick to a good regular oral hygiene routine, including brushing well around the gem to prevent any build up.
Protecting your gem:
Tooth gems are secure, but they’re not invincible and are meant to come off with enough pressure. Biting directly into hard or sticky foods like chewy candy or apples can pop them off, so small adjustments like chewing on the opposite side and cutting tougher foods into smaller bites are best to avoid excess pressure on the gem.
Tooth gems can last anywhere from 3 months to several years. They'll either detach on their own eventually, or can be quickly and easily removed at the dentist.
I’ve got tons of gems in stock: everything from tiny crystals to gold charms, opals, tooth caps, and real diamonds. You’ll have plenty of time to check them all out at your appointment, or take a peek at my gem catalogue anytime if you want to get an idea before coming in!
