What are tooth gems?
Tooth gems are tiny crystals or gold charms that are bonded to the surface of your tooth using dental composite. It’s the same material dentists use for braces or Invisalign attachments, so it’s super safe and non-invasive. They’re a fun, low-commitment way to add a little sparkle to your smile.
Are tooth gems safe?
Yes—when they’re applied by a trained professional using proper materials. At BW Beauty, I use the exact products you’d find in a dental clinic. They’re enamel-safe, non-damaging, and completely removable when it’s time to take them off. Just be sure to keep up with your brushing, flossing, and dental visits like usual.
How long do they last?
Tooth gems can last anywhere from a few months to a few years depending on the design, your bite, your diet, and how well you care for them. A simple gem might last well over a year, while larger or more detailed designs may wear down a bit faster.
Will it hurt or cause sensitivity?
Most people don’t feel anything at all—but in rare cases, you may notice a little sensitivity or an adjustment period, especially with larger designs like a chandelier. If anything feels off, reach out or check in with your dentist just to be safe.
Can tooth gems be applied to any tooth?
Tooth gems can be placed on most natural, healthy teeth, but the exact placement will depend on your bite and tooth shape. I’ll help you find the best spot to make sure it looks great and feels comfortable.
Can I eat and drink normally with a tooth gem?
Yes! Just avoid biting directly into anything super crunchy or sticky (like hard candies or apples), especially on the side where your gem is placed. And as always, good brushing and flossing helps keep everything clean and secure.
How do I remove a tooth gem?
Tooth gems need to be removed by a dental professional. It’s a quick process and won’t harm your tooth, but definitely don’t try to remove it yourself. Your dental office may charge a small fee for removal depending on their policy.
Can they be applied to dental work?
Tooth gems can only be applied to natural teeth, not crowns, veneers, or dental work.
Do my teeth need to be perfect to get one?
Not at all. Tooth gems are for all smiles. Your smile is unique, and that’s what makes it the perfect canvas! I offer gem options for all tooth shapes and styles.
What happens if it falls off and I swallow it?
No worries! They’re tiny, smooth, and totally body-safe. The materials I use are lead-free, non-toxic, and made to safely pass through your system if swallowed.
Can I still go to the dentist with a tooth gem?
Yes, and you should! Keep up with regular cleanings and checkups just like usual.
Can I get a tooth gem if I wear a retainer or Invisalign?
Yes! I now offer tooth gems on dental retainers. It's a really exciting option if you’ve been wanting a gem but it wasn't previously possible. But a heads up: because the gem has to be applied directly to your retainer, it should be considered a permanent change to that spot. The gem can last a long time, but if it eventually comes off, you might notice a small mark where it was placed. If you’re wearing Invisalign, I can apply a gem, but you’ll definitely want to check with your orthodontist first and get their okay. Every case is a little different and I want to make sure your treatment stays right on track.
Right after your appointment:
Thanks to the dental-grade materials I use, your gems are fully set by the time you leave. You can eat, drink, brush, and floss like normal, no special rules or restrictions necessary.
Daily care:
Stick to a good regular oral hygiene routine, especially brushing well around the gem to prevent build-up. If you're keeping your gem long-term, a removal and refresh around the one-year mark is a good idea to maintain overall dental health.
Protecting your gem:
Tooth gems are secure, but they’re not invincible and are meant to come off with enough proessure (to keep your tooth safe). Biting directly into hard or sticky foods like chewy candy, apples, or crunchy sandwiches can pop them off. Try chewing on the opposite side, and cut tougher foods into smaller bites to play it safe.
Tooth gems typically last anywhere from 6 months to a year, and with the right care, they can last even longer. Larger gems or multi-gem designs might have a shorter wear time simply because of their size and placement.
Either way, the goal is always a secure, long-lasting gems you’ll love!
I’ve got over 100 gems in stock: everything from tiny crystals to gold charms, opals, and real diamonds. You’ll have plenty of time to check them all out at your appointment, or take a peek at my gem catalogue anytime if you want to get an idea before coming in.
