What are tooth gems?
Tooth gems are tiny genuine Swarovski crystals, diamonds, opals, or 18-22 karat gold charms that are temporarily applied to the surface of your tooth using dental composite (the same material dentists use for fillings and attaching braces or Invisalign buttons, so it’s safe and non-invasive or permanent). Gems are quick and easy way to do something unique and add a little bit of sparkle to your smile!
Are tooth gems safe?
Yes, when applied by a trained professional using proper materials and maintained with regular dental hygiene. At BW Beauty, I use the exact products you’d find in a dental clinic so they’re enamel-safe, non-damaging, and easily removable (at the dentist) when it’s time to take them off. Just keep up with your brushing, flossing, and dental visits like usual to make sure the gem stays clean and your teeth healthy.
How long do they last?
Tooth gems can last anywhere from a few months to a few years depending on the design, placement, and how well you care for them! Small gems might last well over a year or more, while larger gems or more detailed designs may only last a few months.
Will it hurt or cause sensitivity?
Most people don’t feel anything at all, but you may notice a little sensitivity or an adjustment period (especially with larger designs like a Chandelier Tooth). If anything feels off, reach out or check in with your dentist just to be safe.
Can tooth gems be applied to any tooth?
Tooth gems can be placed on most natural, healthy teeth, but the exact placement will depend on your bite (how your teeth close together) and tooth shape. I’ll help you find the best spot to make sure it looks perfect and feels comfortable!
Can I eat and drink normally with a tooth gem?
Yes, just avoid biting directly into anything super hard, crunchy or sticky (like hard candies or apples) on the side where your gem is placed. Tooth gems are durable, but are meant to come off with enough pressure to keep your enamel safe, so just be aware of the gems while eating. And as always, good brushing and flossing helps keep everything clean and secure.
How do I remove a tooth gem?
If your gem doesn’t fall off on its own over time and you’re ready to take it off, it’s best to have it removed by a dental professional. It’s a super quick and simple process that won’t damage your tooth when done properly. Keep in mind some dental offices may charge a small fee for removal. Most dental offices know how to do the removals as it's identical to removing orthodontic braces, but I also have recommendations if needed.
Can they be applied to dental work?
Tooth gems can only be applied to natural teeth, not crowns, veneers, or dental work.
Do my teeth need to be perfect to get one?
Not at all, tooth gems are for all smiles. I offer gem options for all preferences and teeth! The sky is truly the limit with tooth gems and the options you have to find the perfect fit for you.
What happens if it falls off and I swallow it?
No worries, you won't even notice. The gems are tiny, smooth, and totally body-safe. The materials I use are lead-free, non-toxic, and made to safely pass through your system if swallowed.
Can I still go to the dentist with a tooth gem?
You can and should keep up with regular cleanings and check-ups just like usual.
Can I get a tooth gem if I wear a retainer, nightguard, or Invisalign?
Unfortunately, no. Because tooth gems are meant to come off with pressure, the snug fit of retainers or other dental appliances will affect the longevity of the gems, and it's impossible to say how quickly that would happen. Wearing gems under your Invisalign could also affect the treatment trajectory and how your teeth shift. But you can ask your dentist to mould your dental appliances to fit over top of existing gems!
Right after your appointment:
Thanks to the dental-grade materials I use, your gems are fully set by the time you leave the appointment. You can eat, drink, brush, and floss like normal, there's no special rules or restrictions.
Daily care:
Stick to a good regular oral hygiene routine, especially brushing well around the gem to prevent build-up. If you're keeping your gem long-term, a removal and refresh around the one-year mark is a good idea to maintain overall dental health.
Protecting your gem:
Tooth gems are secure, but they’re not invincible and are meant to come off with enough pressure (to keep your enamel safe). Biting directly into hard or sticky foods like chewy candy or apples can pop them off. Minor adjustments like chewing on the opposite side and cutting tougher foods into smaller bites are best to avoid excess pressure on the gem.
Tooth gems typically last anywhere from 3 months to a year, or even many years! They'll either fall off on their own in time, or when you're ready for something new, you can get your gems removed at the dentist.
It's best to get a cleaning and check-up of your teeth and gems at the dentist every 6-12 months to ensure they're staying clean and healthy.
I’ve got over 100 gems in stock: everything from tiny crystals to gold charms, opals, and real diamonds. You’ll have plenty of time to check them all out at your appointment, or take a peek at my gem catalogue anytime if you want to get an idea before coming in.
